The short version. Build for Czech buyers and Google first. Treat Seznam as a secondary channel to review through your own data — not as a second market-entry project.
A website can be technically well built and still underperform in Czech search because it has not been built for Czech people. The common issues are less dramatic than an algorithm change: English-led copy, translated keywords nobody uses, unclear local offers, a weak link between the site and sales, or pages that Google cannot confidently match to the right language and audience.
For international companies, Czech SEO starts with a Google-first foundation. In StatCounter's all-device snapshot for July 2026, Google held 81.02% of Czech search-engine share; Seznam held 14.1%. That makes Seznam a real secondary channel, but it does not justify treating Czechia as two separate SEO markets. StatCounter, July 2026
1. Start with the Czech buyer's question
SEO is not the process of inserting Czech words into an English page. It is the work of understanding how a Czech buyer describes a problem, compares options and decides whom to contact.
For a B2B company, the important searches may be technical terms, compliance questions, category comparisons, supplier searches or local service queries. For an e-commerce brand, they may be product types, attributes, compatibility, price and delivery questions. A direct translation often misses the vocabulary that signals actual buying intent.
Before creating content, map the search journey:
- the problem a buyer is trying to solve;
- the terms they use before they know a product category;
- the category and comparison searches that appear once they do;
- the evidence they need before contacting a supplier or buying;
- the question that should lead to a page, a case study, a product comparison or a conversation.
This research should shape the offer as well as the article plan. If the company cannot describe its proposition clearly in Czech, more search traffic will only make that gap more visible.
2. Give Czech pages their own job
A Czech version should not be a thin translation layer around an English site. Each important Czech page needs a clear purpose: explain a service, answer a buying question, support a product decision or turn a relevant visit into a qualified enquiry.
Useful pages usually include:
- a Czech headline that makes the offer specific;
- concise explanations of the process, scope and next step;
- proof that a buyer can assess — references, case studies, specifications, partners or a real local contact route;
- internal links to the pages that answer the next question;
- a conversion path that matches the commercial model, such as an enquiry, technical consultation, sample request or product purchase.
Do not publish several near-identical versions of the same page merely to target slight keyword variations. One well-structured, genuinely useful page is a better foundation than several weak duplicates.
3. Set up international SEO correctly
When a website has equivalent pages in English and Czech, use separate URLs and connect the language versions with reciprocal hreflang annotations. For a Czech page targeted to Czechia, the correct value is cs-CZ, not cz-CZ. Google recommends explicitly labelling language or regional variants and requires the alternate pages to reference one another. Google Search Central
The practical rules are simple:
- Keep each language on its own stable URL.
- Use a real Czech version, not a page that changes language only through browser detection.
- Add reciprocal hreflang annotations only between equivalent pages.
- Include a self-referencing annotation and check that every alternate URL is absolute and indexable.
- Use an x-default page only where a language or country selector genuinely helps visitors.
A .cz domain, a Czech subdirectory or a subdomain can all work. The choice should follow the company's broader domain and operating model. The more important decision is consistency: each language needs a crawlable, clearly owned section of the site and a plan for keeping its content current.
4. Make the Google foundation boringly reliable
Czech SEO does not need a special technical recipe. It needs the same technical discipline that a serious site needs in any market:
- pages that return the right status code and can be crawled;
- a clean internal-link structure;
- useful titles and descriptions that match the Czech page;
- sensible canonical tags;
- an XML sitemap;
- mobile usability and fast, stable pages;
- Search Console monitoring for indexation, errors and search queries;
- structured data when it accurately represents the business, product, article or event.
Start with the pages that affect revenue: core services, product categories, commercial landing pages and high-value help content. Fixing a hundred low-value URLs while the main Czech offer is unclear is not SEO progress.
5. Build authority through evidence, not a link quota
Links still matter, but the goal is not to collect an arbitrary number of .cz domains. The better objective is to make the business verifiable in the Czech market.
Relevant evidence may include Czech partners, technical documentation, local case studies, trade media coverage, professional associations, distributors, events or genuine industry relationships. These strengthen the commercial story and can also create useful links and mentions.
Avoid treating a local office address, a Czech server or a directory listing as a shortcut to rankings. A legitimate local presence can support real customer service, partnerships and local business visibility. It does not replace valuable content and a credible offer.
6. Keep Seznam in proportion
Seznam should be monitored, not mythologised. Its search results, crawler and advertising products are its own ecosystem, so a company with meaningful traffic from it should review performance there. But an international company does not need a separate Seznam strategy before it has:
- a strong Czech Google foundation;
- Czech pages that answer real buyer questions;
- clear measurement by channel and landing page;
- evidence that Seznam contributes to the audience or revenue it wants.
Do not make assumptions about Seznam users based on age, education or digital ability. Search-share data cannot support that conclusion. Let the company's analytics, customer research and category economics decide whether further attention is worthwhile.
7. Separate product comparison from organic SEO
For product retailers, Zboží.cz and Heureka may be relevant discovery and comparison channels. They are not a substitute for SEO, and they are not equally relevant to every business.
Assess them separately if the company sells comparable physical products. The practical questions are whether the category is present, whether the product feed is accurate, whether pricing and availability are competitive, and whether fulfilment, returns and customer support match the promise made in the feed. Service businesses and many B2B firms will often gain more from strong Czech pages, partner visibility and targeted demand generation.
8. Measure commercial outcomes, not just positions
Keyword positions can help diagnose progress, but they are not the objective. A Czech SEO dashboard should connect visibility to business outcomes:
- which Czech pages are gaining impressions and clicks;
- which queries show commercial intent;
- where qualified enquiries or purchases originate;
- which pages assist a sale even if they do not produce the final conversion;
- where visitors leave because the offer, proof or next step is unclear.
Review the data by language and market. A rise in English traffic from Czechia does not prove that a Czech market-entry strategy is working. The question is whether the Czech experience is creating the right commercial conversations.
A practical 90-day sequence
A useful first quarter usually looks like this:
- Audit the existing site, language structure and measurement.
- Research Czech buyer language, competitors and commercial search intent.
- Improve the core Czech offer pages and their conversion paths.
- Fix the technical and international SEO foundations.
- Publish a small number of high-value Czech pages that answer real buying questions.
- Monitor Google Search Console, analytics and — where relevant — Seznam or product-comparison performance.
- Use the results to decide what content, partnerships or technical work deserves the next investment.
SEO becomes far more effective when it is part of market entry rather than an isolated traffic exercise. The goal is not simply to rank in Czechia. It is to be easy for the right Czech customer to find, understand and trust.
Kodo helps international companies turn that into a practical local plan: Czech positioning, website structure, content, measurement and the commercial groundwork around them. Discuss your Czech market entry.
