Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin company, has selected Česká letecká servisní (ČLS) as its first authorised distribution centre for Black Hawk helicopter parts in the European Union.

The announcement is more than an aviation headline. It is a practical signal that Czechia can serve as a regional base for technically demanding support, logistics and after-sales services in European defence and dual-use supply chains.

The companies did not disclose the value of the agreement, planned investment or number of new jobs. The related S-70 FIREHAWK programme for Czechia is being developed; it is not described as a completed aircraft contract.

What Sikorsky announced

ČLS will stock Sikorsky-recommended components in Czechia and distribute them to operators across the EU. More than 150 Black Hawk helicopters are currently in service in the Union, including S-70, UH-60M and UH-60A/L platforms.

Fast access to high-demand components matters because operators use these helicopters for emergency response, security operations, humanitarian assistance and other mission-critical work.

Before the appointment, ČLS completed Sikorsky’s review of quality, operational, process and policy requirements. That detail is important: the Czech company was selected not only because of geography, but because it demonstrated the capability to work within a controlled international support system.

Why Czechia makes sense as a service hub

Czechia combines a central European location with a long industrial and aviation tradition. For a regional support centre, this can mean access to neighbouring EU markets, engineering talent, established logistics and a supplier base accustomed to export manufacturing.

ČLS already provides avionics and special-mission solutions for military and civil aircraft. Its work includes design, installation, certification, maintenance and personnel training. Those capabilities fit a model in which customers need more than a warehouse: they need reliable technical support around the platform.

The S-70 Black Hawk is manufactured by PZL Mielec in Poland. A Czech distribution centre therefore also strengthens a broader Central European support chain rather than creating an isolated national project.

What the decision means for foreign suppliers

The appointment does not mean that every defence or aviation company can immediately enter the Black Hawk supply chain. Qualification, certification, cybersecurity, export-control rules, procurement procedures and long sales cycles remain important barriers.

However, it creates a visible anchor around which opportunities may develop. Relevant fields can include:

  • avionics and aircraft electronics;
  • maintenance, repair and overhaul services;
  • certified components and specialist materials;
  • warehouse, traceability and logistics technology;
  • training and simulation;
  • cybersecurity and mission-support software;
  • equipment for emergency and firefighting missions.

Foreign companies should first identify whether they offer a certified product, a subcontracting capability or a complementary service. These are different market-entry paths and require different partners.

The FIREHAWK connection

ČLS and Sikorsky are also working with PZL Mielec and United Rotorcraft towards launching an S-70 FIREHAWK programme for Czechia.

FIREHAWK is associated with aerial firefighting and emergency response. For suppliers, that creates a dual-use angle connecting aviation, civil protection, sensors, communications and specialised mission equipment.

The wording matters: the programme is being worked towards. Companies should not treat it as a confirmed Czech procurement contract until the responsible parties publish a concrete decision.

A practical checklist for companies considering Czechia

Before approaching the market, a foreign supplier should answer five questions:

  1. Does the product require aviation, military or security certification?
  2. Is a Czech entity needed, or can the company work through a distributor or industrial partner?
  3. Which export-control and ownership rules apply to the technology?
  4. Can the company provide local-language support, training and long-term service?
  5. Is the opportunity tied to Black Hawk support specifically, or to the wider Czech defence and emergency-response ecosystem?

The strongest entry plan usually starts with a precise capability and partner map, not a broad claim that the company wants to sell to the defence sector.
